1. Project Snapshot (Fact Sheet)

Executing Contractor: Damietta Shipping Agency (DSA Egypt)

Vessel / Client: MV AL MANAMAH / Hapag-Lloyd

Terminal / Location: Damietta Container & Cargo Handling Co. (DCHC), Damietta Port, Egypt

Operation Type: Emergency Cargo Salvage, De-stacking Extraction, Wharfside Rigging & Re-Lashing

Cargo Handled: Heavy Industrial Drive Shafts / Subsea Coated Steel Pipes (Over-Length / Breakbulk)

Platform Transition: Shifted In-Hold / Damaged Stacks Restowed & Pre-lashed onto 40ft Flat Racks

Key Equipment: Ship-to-Shore (STS) Gantry Cranes, Heavy Synthetic Slings, Custom Timber Saddles

Safety Milestone: **Zero Lost Time Incident (Zero LTI)

2. The Maritime Incident & Operational Challenge

During rough sea transit, severe rolling caused the lashing and securing systems of over-length industrial drive shafts to fail aboard MV AL MANAMAH (chartered/operated by Hapag-Lloyd).

The Critical Hazards:

  1. Container Penetration: The heavy steel shafts broke loose and pierced the roofs and sidewalls of adjacent dry containers, wedging tightly between corner posts and stack cell guides.

  2. High-Risk Unrigging: Extracting unguided cylindrical loads without certified lifting points presented an immediate threat of swing-back or dropping onto adjacent container bays.

  3. Flange & Coating Vulnerability: Protective wooden packing collapsed during transit, leaving delicate machined ends exposed to dynamic shear damage.

  4. Tight Turnaround Window: Hapag-Lloyd needed an emergency response partner on the ground to clear the hazard, inspect cargo, re-lash the entire consignment onto flat racks, and maintain the vessel's sailing schedule without port detention.

3. Scope of Work Executed by Damietta Shipping Agency (DSA Egypt)

The technical stevedoring and emergency response unit of Damietta Shipping Agency (DSA Egypt) mobilized directly at the DCHC quay:

Phase 1: Controlled Extraction & Rigging

  • DSA Egypt marine riggers set up multi-leg soft synthetic choke hitches to balance the bending moments along the elongated pipe bodies without putting stress on damaged collars.

  • Working in direct coordination with the STS gantry crane operators, Damietta Shipping Agency supervised the micro-hoisting extraction, clearing the shafts out of the crushed container hulls millimeter by millimeter.

Phase 2: Wharfside Discharge & Technical Inspection

  • Cargo was safely lowered to the quay apron at Damietta Port under continuous DSA Egypt supervision.

  • A joint technical survey was conducted with marine surveyors to document integrity and prepare cargo saddles.

Phase 3: Certified Flat-Rack Bedding & Re-Securing

  • DSA Egypt technicians designed and installed contoured timber cradles and dunnage blocks on 40ft flat racks to absorb dynamic sea forces.

  • High-tensile steel wire bridles, heavy ratchet load binders, and anti-friction rubber pads were applied in strict compliance with the IMO/CSS Code Cargo Securing Manual.

4. Operational Results & Value Delivered by DSA Egypt

  • Rapid Turnaround: Damietta Shipping Agency completed salvage, quay transfers, and re-lashing operations ahead of schedule, allowing MV AL MANAMAH to depart without port delay fines.

  • Flawless Safety Record: Zero secondary damage to ship cellular structures or terminal assets, and zero personal injuries (Zero LTI).

  • Partner Alignment: Smooth operational synergy between DSA Egypt, Hapag-Lloyd vessel operations, and DCHC terminal management kept regular container moves running uninterrupted.
